How should I price my car?

  • Updated

We recommend using our valuation tool to give you a suggested listing price for your car. It uses current market data to suggest a listing price that gives you the best chance of selling.

What is the carsales' valuation tool?

The carsales' valuation tool gives you a suggested listing price based on up-to-date market data from the sales of thousands of cars. It can help you understand what buyers may pay for your car, so you can price competitively.

How does carsales' valuation tool work?

The valuation is tailored to the specific car you enter. It takes into account:

  • Make

  • Model

  • Variant and badge

  • Year

  • Odometer reading

The valuation does not factor in:

  • Your car’s condition

  • Optional extras or modifications

  • Location

Will my ad include a suggested listing price?

Yes, in most cases we will provide you with a suggested listing price for your ad based on the valuation tool.

If your car is older, rare, or in a unique category, there may not be enough market data to generate a suggested price.

What are price indicators?

Pricing indicators help buyers understand how the car is priced compared to similar delisted cars.

If your car is priced well, a price indicator may appear on your ad to show buyers it’s likely to be a good deal.

Cars priced competitively tend to receive more enquiries over the life of the listing.

Should I compare my price with other cars listed on carsales?

You can check similar listings, but keep in mind:

  • Listed prices are not sold prices.

  • Other cars may differ in ways you can’t easily see, such as condition, history, or features.

Price badges on listings can help indicate whether a car is priced well. Listings without a price badge may be priced higher than what we consider good market value.

What’s the best way to choose my final price?

Use the carsales valuation tool as your starting point, then adjust your price based on:

  • Your car’s condition

  • Optional extras or features

  • How quickly you want to sell

Pricing your car accurately from the start can help attract more enquiries and reduce time to sell.
