How does requesting a payment work?

If you’re eligible, you can request payment for your car through carsales. It’s completely free as part of your listing. To use this feature, follow the steps below.

1. ID verification and linking your bank account

To get paid through carsales, we ask you to verify your Australian passport or Australian driver licence. Only one is required, not both. This document is checked against trusted Australian databases, including credit reporting agencies.

Don’t worry — this isn’t a credit check. It won’t affect your credit score or leave a mark on your credit file. We never access your full credit history. It’s simply a way to confirm the details you’ve shared.

After your verification is complete, you can link the bank account you want to get paid into. See our help article on how to link your bank account.

2. Request a payment

To request a payment, simply enter the amount you’d like for the car. Then choose how you’d like to send the request. You can send it directly to a known buyer through the carsales messaging service, or share it more broadly using a unique link or QR code.

3. Buyer transfers funds to their carsales wallet

After a request has been sent, the buyer can accept, decline, or message you. If the buyer accepts, and they complete the ID check, they can transfer funds to their carsales wallet. Just a heads-up: their bank may have daily transfer limits, so it could take a few hours, or even a few business days* for the full amount to to arrive in their carsales wallet.

5. Track the funds

All funds (including any deposit) are held in a secure, third-party bank account.

You can check how much the buyer has added at any time by going to:

  1. My account

  2. Manage your ad

  3. Get paid tab

We’ll also notify you when the buyer has finished adding fund to their carsales wallet.

How do you get paid at pick-up?

Here’s how it works:

  1. The buyer taps Release funds.

  2. You tap Accept funds.

If you don’t tap Accept funds within 15 minutes, no worries — just repeat the steps. Release. Accept.

The funds will land in your bank account — usually within seconds*. Make sure both you and the buyer confirm that the funds have arrived.

If there was a deposit, that gets released to you at the same time.

Then it’s time to swap keys and transfer the registration.

And remember: either you or the buyer can cancel the offer anytime before the funds are released. After the funds are released, carsales is not able to reverse the funds.

*Transfer times can be affected by a range of factors. See Annexure C of T&Cs for details.
