Increasing safety and security
At carsales, verifying your identity information helps reduce the risk of fraud and creates a safer, more secure environment1. It gives customers greater confidence when buying and selling cars, making payments and offers, and interacting with others.
What you need
To get paid through carsales, we ask to verify your Australian passport or Australian driver licence. Only one is required, not both. This document is checked against trusted Australian databases, including credit reporting agencies.
Don’t worry — this isn’t a credit check. It won’t affect your credit score or leave a mark on your credit file. We never access your full credit history. It’s simply a way to confirm the details you’ve shared.
How long does it take
Verification usually takes less than 5 minutes if it works the first time.
Checking the seller’s photo ID
We also strongly recommend checking the other party’s photo ID in person at pick-up before releasing any funds. Our verification process adds an extra layer of protection — but it doesn’t guarantee the identity of the other person1.
carsales takes your privacy seriously and only uses your information in line with our Privacy Policy.
1ID verification confirms that the user’s identity document information matches official records, but carsales cannot guarantee that the user matches the information they present. Users should confirm the other party’s identity in person prior to releasing funds.
