Why do I need ID verification?

Increasing safety and security

At carsales, verifying your identity information helps reduce the risk of fraud and creates a safer, more secure environment. This gives customers greater confidence when buying and selling cars, making payments and offers, and interacting with others1.

What you need

To pay through carsales, we ask to verify your Australian passport or Australian driver licence. Only one document is required, and it’s checked against Australian databases, including credit reporting agencies.

Don’t worry — this isn’t a credit check. It won’t affect your credit score or leave a mark on your credit file. We never access your full credit history. It’s simply a way to confirm the details you’ve shared.

When do you carry out ID verification?

When you make your offer or after your offer has been accepted.

How long does it take?

On average, verification takes less than 5 minutes to complete, if it works the first time.

Checking the seller’s photo ID

We also strongly recommend confirming the other party’s photo ID, in person at pick-up, before releasing any funds. Our verification process offers a level of assurance but doesn’t guarantee the identity of the other person1.

carsales takes your privacy seriously and will only use your personal information in line with our Privacy Policy.

1ID verification confirms that the user’s identity document information matches official records, but carsales cannot guarantee that the user matches the information they present. Users should confirm the other party’s identity in person prior to releasing funds.
