If you’re interested in buying a car, you can check whether it has been reported as stolen by getting a vehicle history report. The report will show if the car:
has been reported as stolen to Australian police
has a written-off history, such as severe accident or flood damage
has finance owing on it.
Stolen and written-off information comes from the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System (NEVDIS).
What should I do if the car has been reported as stolen?
Don’t confront the seller. Let them know you’ve changed your mind about the car, then contact the police.
Give the police the seller’s details and a copy of the vehicle history report you purchased from us.
What if the stolen car information is incorrect?
Stolen vehicle data may sometimes be incomplete, inaccurate or out of date.
If something doesn’t look right, contact the police force in the state or territory shown in the stolen vehicle notification to make an enquiry.
