What is an extended warranty and what is carsales Warranty?
An extended warranty is an insurance product you can purchase when your original manufacturer’s warranty has ended or is close to ending. It is designed to cover you for unexpected costs of mechanical repairs. A carsales Warranty is a high quality extended warranty offered by carsales and underwritten by Virginia Surety Company Inc., one of the largest underwriters of insured service plans and warranty products in the world.
How does a carsales Warranty differ from a manufacturer’s warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty is provided on a new car by the manufacturer and usually lasts for a set period of time or kilometres (whichever comes first). Many manufacturers' warranties cover a vehicle for up to 3 years or 100,000km. You may also be covered for a period of time under a dealer statutory warranty. A carsales Warranty is designed to cover you once your other coverage ends. There are different periods of cover available for your carsales Warranty - starting from 12 months.
carsales Warranty provides three different levels of cover (basic, standard and comprehensive). The full names of the packages are the Basic Extended Motor Vehicle Warranty, the Standard Extended Motor Vehicle Warranty and the Comprehensive Extended Manufacturer Warranty.
How do I choose the right carsales Warranty package?
Selecting a carsales Warranty package is based on a combination of individual preferences and eligibility. When selecting a package, consider what claim limit you would like to have and the breadth of coverage. We encourage you to go through the steps to get a quote, as this will give you an understanding of which packages you are eligible for.
How often do I need to get my car serviced if I have a carsales Warranty?
You only need to get your car serviced in accordance with your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation. These details can be found in your service log book.
Where can I take my car to be repaired under a carsales Warranty?
We encourage you to take your vehicle to your manufacturer network dealership. However you may also have your car repaired at any licensed repairer. Please ensure the repairer contacts us for authorisation prior to the commencement of any work.
What do I do if I have a breakdown? How do I make a claim?
Take your vehicle to your manufacturer network dealership or a licensed repairer with details of your policy schedule. Your repairer should contact us and provide their diagnosis of the problem, the cause, and the estimated cost of parts and labour (note: you may need to provide proof of your vehicle’s service history).
Repairs must not commence unless authorised by us.
When a claim has been authorised, we will supply the repairer with an authorisation number and approve the commencement of repairs. Upon completion, all you have to do is sign the invoice that outlines cost of parts, labour hours and the authorisation number, and the dealer will forward it on to us for payment.

Can I claim more than once on my warranty?
You can claim on your warranty more than once but will be limited by the claim limit value and maximum policy benefit stipulated in your policy.
Who pays for the repairs?
We pay for all repairs up to the value of the authorisation - including parts and labour, when the claim has been accepted.
What happens if I sell my car? Can I transfer or cancel my policy?
If you sell your car you may have the option of transferring ownership or cancelling.
- Transferring ownership: If you sell your car to a new owner the policy can usually be transferred by completing the Transfer of Ownership Form (in the PDS) and paying a transfer fee of $88. This must be done within 14 days after the transfer. Certain exceptions apply- please see your product disclosure statement for full details.
- Cancelling the policy: If there have not been any claims, you can cancel the policy and you may be eligible for a partial refund (we will deduct a figure to represent the period of cover enjoyed together with reasonable costs). There is a $110 cancellation fee.
When does my cover begin?
The commencement of policy coverage depends on individual circumstances. If you have a manufacturer’s warranty or dealer’s statutory warranty, your cover will commence when the existing warranty ends.
However if you have no existing manufacturer or dealer warranty or you don’t have a full service history, your cover will commence 90 days from the policy issue date.
Am I still eligible for cover if I have not got a full service history?
A full service history is not required to purchase a carsales Warranty. Our warranties have been designed to be flexible and cater for consumers’ different situations. We will ask you about your service history when purchasing your warranty so we can show you all the options and products available.
Do these policies have an excess fee?
No. These policies have no excess fees.
